Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten is a premium cruise line focused on Scandinavian cruises. Despite not operating in any English-speaking countries, the primary language on board is English. As a premium cruise line, it tends to be more expensive, but it offers some unique experiences.

A few things that are notable about Hurtigruten are that there is no casino or kids’ club. While the ships are not adults only, the lack of a kids’ club makes it unsuitable for families that want to leave their kids for someone else to watch.

Here is what makes Hurtigruten a good option:

  • You enjoy being with the people you are traveling with, especially if you are bringing children.
    • You will spend a lot of time with whoever you are traveling with, if you aren’t traveling solo or actively avoiding your friends and/or family.
  • You are looking for a small-ship experience.
    • Hurtigruten prides itself on its relatively small ships.
  • You want to visit a lot of ports.
    • This line docks at a lot of ports, even several per day.

Here is why you might not want to sail with Hurtigruten:

  • You don’t want to sail to Scandinavia.
    • This is all that this cruise line does, so this should be obvious.
  • You want a big ship with lots of amenities.
    • The ships are smaller. The restaurants are limited. There is little on board the ship.
  • You want to spend a significant amount of time at any single port.
    • Some ports are visited for as little as 10 minutes, so you won’t see much of those ports. Some ports have longer stays, but this line tends to include shorter stops.
  • You want to utilize the kids’ club.
    • They don’t have one. If you need someone to watch your kids, find a different line.

The number of tons to passengers is the amount of ship per guest. Higher is, theoretically, better. It produces a cross-company number that may reflect the luxury of a ship.
